In this book, Melody gets hurt and Lou and Grandpa keep fighting. It is too bad Amy didn't really have a say on writing their father. Amy and her family must all have a natural instinct or talent with horses if they foaled Daybreak without any veterinary qualifications or training, and how they didn't give up is amazing.
