Playing for Keeps is in Lani Hernandez's point of view. In the first semester, Lani spent alot of time with the horses, matchmaking with her friends, shopping and a billion other things. In the past, she's had no problem making straight A's no matter how much else she takes on. So it surprises her when her report card for the first semester is 2 A's and the rest B's. And unfortunately, her parents take it too seriously. They write her this letter about changing schools and she is horrified. She writes to her oldest sister, Marta, for help and her friends try to help her to. Then her parents come to CH for a meeting with Dr. Starling and they see her take a fall on Colorado which convinces them even more that she should move.(Lani hurt her wrist). After the meeting, her parents announce their moving her to her sisters' school in California. Lani totally falls apart and doesn't tell her friends until the day of Honey's big date with Josh! Her friends find out she was keeping secrets from them and they devise a tutoring plan for her. Then she thinks up this fab idea for the Adams fundraiser (Rodeo day). She becomes head of the activity committee. Her dad and Marta come down for rodeo day, and at first he thinks it's another distraction from her schoolwork. But then he sees her win a barrel racing competition and finds out that she was the only 7th grader to be the head of the activity committee. Also several teachers tell Commander Hernandez that Lani is doing well academically. So at the end of the book he lets her stay!!!!
